At Transitions, All of Our Girls Are Gold Medalists!

At Transitions, we believe that freedom begins with a dream. That’s why everything we do is aimed at helping girls aim higher as they heal. It’s also the reason that all of our girls are becoming gold medalists. That’s right. Each girl at Transitions is working toward a gold medal.

Last year, we had a problem. Our girls go through a lot during their time at the Transitions’ Dream Home. Whether they are working through trauma, dealing with personal struggles, developing adult life skills, or beginning to take control of their decisions and their lives; it’s tough work. Our staff were concerned that the girls needed a way to be recognized for the hard work and accomplishments that they had achieved. The program at Transitions is pretty rigorous. The program has three phases that must be completed before girls graduate from the Dream Home. We wanted to find a way to recognize the hard work they do as they graduate from each phase. We needed a solution.

The team at Transitions discussed some ideas of how we might do something special to honor the girl’s journey toward their own dreams. It was time to ask our friends in the United States for help. After an initial e-mail to friends and colleagues, we got a response from a friend, Jeff Stegman, who runs Osborne Coinage in Ohio. He had a great idea. He suggested that we create medallions and honor the girls with a medal at each phase and something special at graduation. We loved the idea and got to work. Jeff’s team helped to create the coins and his company provided these to Transitions at no cost!

The result of this project was the creation of four unique medals, each with a special meaning for each phase to commemorate their success and show the girls how much they have achieved.

The Medals and Their Meaning

Phase One - The Sparrow - the blue colored medal represent freedom and learning to spread their wings, many for the first time. The sparrow represents finding safe harbor and the journey toward home.

Phase Two - The Bodhi Tree - this tree is special, with heart-shaped leaves and deep roots. Girls in their second phase are learning to put down roots in their lives and learning to love and be loved again. The tree represents growth, perserverance and strength.

Phase Three - The Heart. This pink medal is pretty simple - girls in the final phase are not only maturing toward adulthood, they are learning to give to others. Community services and reaching out are important facets of what we do in helping girls to heal. This heart is large and obvious - love is the goal.

Gold Medal - The Lotus. The lotus, which is in our logo has a lot of meaing at Transitions. This beautiful flower, grows in horrible conditions, facing many obstacles to emerge a vibrant, bold flower that stands out against the murk and mire that it rises above. The girls of Transitions have worked hard to discover themselves, find hope in their healing, and a dream for their future. They have earned these medals and we are proud of them.

Christmas in Cambodia

The 6th annual Christmas in Cambodia is the holiday event of the season, and the best part is you don’t have to get out your passport, figure out what to wear, or even leave your house!

You can be part of making Christmas wonderful for the girls of Transitions just by “attending” from your very own living room. This year our girls’ dream is much the same as any teenager! They all want new outfits, shoes and school bags, and a big banquet dinner at the Dream House. We are also planning to take them on a trip to Siem Reap, to see the temples for the very first time. This will be an amazing opportunity for them to experience the richness of their heritage first hand.

Starting with a simple matchbox inside a small muslin bag artists work to create unique and inspired pieces, transforming an ordinary matchbox into a work of art. These works of art exemplify what our project is about: taking the local resources we have as a group of burgeoning art therapists and expanding those resources to serve the global community. This video was created from a concept developed by Elizabeth Fischer, in keeping with a booklet designed for Transitions Global in late 2010. The idea was to consolidate the concept of Transitions Global into a short three and a half minute video. Originally, the video was to include an interview with a survivor, but due to time, the interviews will appear elsewhere in Transitions’ videos.

The song “Orange Sky” epitomizes everything Transitions stands for - we do what we do, because we would do the same thing for our own daughters, sisters, and friends…’I had a dream, I stood beneath an orange sky, with my sister standing by’ - may we all be standing by to act on behalf of the vulnerable.

Painting Marathon...? Whaaaaaat?

Have you ever wanted to run a marathon?

How about PAINT A MARATHON?

That’s right, we are talking epic proportions! We, aspiring Naropa art therapy students are hosting a 48 hour painting relay and are currently scouting participants for our three teams!

The Painting Marathon Relay is a fundraising project for the Naropa Community Art Studio International, NCAS-I. The event is part of a continued effort to raise awareness for the mission of NCAS-I and to raise funds for the Summer 2012 Service learning project to go to Cambodia to work with Transitions Global, an organization that shelters girl survivors that have been victims of sex trafficking.

The relay will take place in collaboration with the yearly Boulder Open Studio tours September 30 through October 2. (that’s right! We are on the map!) We will begin at 9pm on Friday night and finish at 9pm Sunday night. The challenge is that each team will keep the brush going until the end of the relay where we will have created 3 paintings that will be given to each teams highest donor! The themes of each painting will be decided by each team captain, and will be started and completed in the duration of this marathon.

What can you do to help?

You can sign up for a painting slot (3 hours) on one of our teams! Tell people to goto our donation web page and sponsor your time by making donations to the cause. (We will tell you more how to do that part later)

You can bring your family and friends to cheer us on!

YOU CAN MAKE A DONATION TO THE CAUSE…………..

Play antics and theatrical performances by the painters will be highly encouraged. Live music and not-so-live music will accompany the process (event schedule to come!).
